Sturdy Side Table

Here is my first piece of furniture. This is a side table with dimensions approx: 300mm x 300mm x 400mm (LWH).

The client asked for a small table for resting drinks on that is sturdy so that their dog couldn’t knock it over. For this reason, I went with full-depth legs for stability and a full-depth shelf for added weight.

The legs gave me an opportunity to create some larger panels that really show off the beautiful face-grain of the Sapele hardwood being used. The grain of the shelf and direction of the chevrons on top are perpendicular to that of the legs, this is a subtle way of nudging someone into noticing the grain of the hardwood, as it’s contending with the chevron table top that is quite striking.
